Packing for college and wondering what to pack and what to leave behind? You’re not alone.
With the gazillion resources and lists out there on what you should bring to college, it can be hard to decipher what you REALLY do and don’t need.
In this post, I’ll be sharing straight-to-the point advice on 3 things I’m glad I DIDN’T bring to college so you know what you can leave behind with no regrets.
1. books
As someone who loves reading, I wanted to bring lots of books with me to college. But… books are heavy and take up precious shelf space.
Reading simply wasn’t a priority for me in college. Most of my time was spent going to class, studying, hanging out with people, eating, and sleeping.
The chances of you reading a book that isn’t a textbook are pretty slim.
If you do want to prioritize reading for fun, utilize the university library!
2. thick pj pants and sweatshirts
Similar to books, thick clothes take up a lot of space and can weigh down your luggage load.
I recommended bringing one or two of your absolute favorite comfort items!
Also *LIFE HACK*: if you leave a bunch of pjs at home, you won’t need to pack pjs when you travel home!
If your dorm building is anything like mine where the entire building is either set to heat or cool, it can be hard to regulate the temperature in your room.
My roommate and I found ourselves sleeping in shorts and a t-shirt almost every night. Sleeping with thick pj pants and a sweatshirt under thick covers was a no-go.
Save the space and bring only your favs. 😉
3. A Printer
I don’t know why this is on so many college essentials lists. I rarely needed to print anything (so much of my homework was online) and when I did, I used my dorm building’s printer.
Many dorm buildings and almost any campus library have at least one printer you can use for free or cheap. A printer is heavy and takes up a lot of valuable dorm space. (Noticing a theme here?)
I put this on my Think Twice Before Bringing These 3 Things to College list because sommmmme people find it helpful to bring one. If you think it’s absolutely necessary to bring a printer, ask you roommate (or even other people on your floor if you have their contact info!) if they are bringing one you can share.

That’s it! Hope this helps you save some packing space and space in your dorm room!
What else are you not bringing to college?
